The Game Is the Excuse. The City Is the Trip.
Some stadiums sit in the middle of a parking lot surrounded by highway. Others sit in the middle of a city that gives you a reason to stay for the whole weekend. When you're picking a game to travel to, the city around the stadium matters just as much as the matchup on the field.
These are the best stadiums for building a full weekend trip around.
The Best Stadium Weekend Trips
New Orleans (NFL: Saints, NBA: Pelicans)
New Orleans is the best sports-weekend city in America, and it's not close. The Superdome sits in the heart of downtown, walkable from the French Quarter. You eat world-class food for every meal, hear live music without trying, and the whole city runs on an energy that makes everything feel like a celebration. The game is almost a bonus.
- Stay: French Quarter or Warehouse District. Walk to everything
- Eat: Commander's Palace, Cochon, Dooky Chase's, beignets at Cafe Du Monde
- Do: French Quarter, Garden District walk, live jazz on Frenchmen Street
- Game day bonus: The pregame energy on Bourbon Street is its own event
Nashville (NFL: Titans, NHL: Predators)
Nashville gives you two sports in one trip during hockey and football season overlap. Bridgestone Arena and Nissan Stadium are both near Lower Broadway, so the honky-tonk bar crawl works as a pregame for either sport. The city's food scene has exploded in recent years.
- Stay: Downtown, walking distance to Broadway
- Eat: Hot chicken at Prince's or Hattie B's, BBQ at Martin's, biscuits at Loveless Cafe
- Do: Lower Broadway honky-tonks, the Ryman Auditorium, a songwriters' round
- Combo play: Catch a Predators game Friday, Titans game Sunday
San Diego (MLB: Padres)
Petco Park sits on the edge of the Gaslamp Quarter, a neighborhood packed with restaurants, bars, and breweries. San Diego weather is perfect basically every day from April through October. It's the most relaxed stadium weekend in sports.
- Stay: Gaslamp Quarter or Little Italy. Walk to the ballpark
- Eat: Fish tacos anywhere, craft beer everywhere, brunch in North Park
- Do: Beaches, Balboa Park, a brewery tour through North Park or Miramar
- Game day bonus: The Park at the Park lawn area has a festival vibe on weekends
Chicago (NFL: Bears, NBA: Bulls, NHL: Blackhawks, MLB: Cubs, White Sox)
Five major sports teams in one city. You can double up on games in a weekend easily, and Chicago has enough food, architecture, comedy, and neighborhood character to fill a week. Soldier Field on the lakefront is the most scenic NFL setting, and Wrigley Field is a national treasure.
- Stay: River North, Loop, or Wicker Park depending on your vibe
- Eat: Italian beef at Al's, deep dish at Lou Malnati's, tacos in Pilsen
- Do: Architecture boat tour, comedy at Second City, walk the lakefront
- Combo play: Cubs on Saturday afternoon, Bears or Blackhawks on Sunday
San Francisco (MLB: Giants, NBA: Warriors)
Oracle Park on the waterfront is one of the best settings in sports. Chase Center is newer and has a great food scene around it. San Francisco gives you a full city experience with world-class food, Golden Gate views, and neighborhoods worth exploring on foot.
- Stay: SOMA, Mission District, or Marina
- Eat: Dim sum in Chinatown, burritos in the Mission, Tartine for pastries
- Do: Walk the Golden Gate Bridge, explore Fisherman's Wharf (touristy but worth one visit), ride the cable cars
- Game day bonus: McCovey Cove kayakers at Giants games are a spectacle
Denver (NFL: Broncos, NBA: Nuggets, NHL: Avalanche, MLB: Rockies)
Denver has four major teams, a craft beer scene that's become nationally famous, and the Rocky Mountains an hour away. Empower Field, Ball Arena, and Coors Field are all near downtown. You can make a weekend out of any combination.
- Stay: LoDo (Lower Downtown) puts you walking distance to all three venues
- Eat: Green chile everything. Biker Jim's gourmet dogs. Local craft breweries
- Do: Red Rocks Amphitheatre, a brewery tour, a day trip to the mountains
- Combo play: Rockies on Saturday, Broncos on Sunday. Both walkable from LoDo
Miami (NFL: Dolphins, NBA: Heat, NHL: Panthers, MLB: Marlins)
The Dolphins are out in Miami Gardens, but the Heat play on the waterfront downtown. Combine a Heat game with the beaches, the food scene (Cuban food in Little Havana, seafood on the beach), and the nightlife. It's a different flavor of sports weekend.
- Stay: South Beach, Brickell, or Wynwood depending on your style
- Eat: Cuban food in Little Havana, ceviche in Brickell, stone crab at Joe's
- Do: South Beach, Wynwood Walls, Everglades day trip, Little Havana walking food tour
- Note: Panthers arena is in Sunrise, about 30 minutes north. Plan accordingly
How to Plan It
Every team page on VisitYourTeam has parking, food, seating, and transportation details. The Game Day Cost Calculator helps you budget the sports part, and the Compare Teams tool is useful if you're choosing between two cities.
The best sports weekends aren't about watching the game and going home. They're about using the game as an anchor for a trip worth taking.
